HOW IT WORKS

Our studio fee is $8 per hour for children under 12 and $9 per hour for everyone 12 & older. This fee includes all the glazes (paints), use of all rubber stamps, stencils, brushes, sponges and other tools needed to paint your pottery, as well as our help, the finishing glaze and firing fee. Unfortunately you will not be able to take your piece home today. We need to fire it in our kiln. Once your piece is glazed and fired, it will be food-safe and oven, microwave, and dishwasher-safe.

SO......LETS GET STARTED !   HELPFUL TIPS

1. Choose the piece your want to paint.
(Sometimes this is the hardest part)
2. Decide what you are going to paint on your
   pottery.
We have lots of idea books, rubber
stamps, stencils and drawings to trace. We
can show you how all of these things work.
3. Choose your colors.
TRUST THE TILES on the paint rack.
The glazes DO look different in the bottle
(and even more different when they dry
on your pottery). If you paint three solid
coats the colors will fire the way they look
   on the tiles.
You don't need to paint anything white
(when the bisque is fired it is a light,
   creamy, natural white).
4. Next, wipe your piece with a damp, not
dripping, sponge (on the table). This dusts
off the piece as well as enables the glaze to
adhere better. (Whatever doesn't wipe off
will usually burn away. If you're unsure about
   a mark, just ask.)

. You can use #2 pencil to sketch your design on the bisque. It burns away in the kiln. (Just be careful to  not dig in to the bisque or draw too heavily.) You can erase with a pink eraser if you need to.
. You can use Saral paper to transfer a drawing or design onto your pottery.
. Paint light colors first - dark colors go on top of light colors. Light colors will not show on top of dark colors despite what you see when you are painting. (When fired, the colors become more transparent.) So, if you want a yellow flower on a blue background, you will need to paint the flower & then paint the background AROUND it. (Yellow will often turn green when painted on top of blue, etc.
. To use rubber stamps, paint a light coat of paint on the stamp and press onto your piece. You will probably need to paint the stamped area with two more coats of glaze to get full coverage & to cleanup the edges. You can practice on the paper on your table.
. To use the stencils, you can either trace the design in pencil and fill it in or you can use a sponge brush and gently dab it on. - We have lots of other tools and tricks to help you. We have idea books, clip art and books of sayings - so much more than we list here!

Please feel free to ask for an in store demonstration of any of the above tips.
